ADDAM: Accurate Diagnosis in Diabetes for Appropriate Management
Principal Investigator: Dr. Brandy Wicklow
Diabetes mellitus type 1 (T1D) is a disease that requires treatment with insulin injections or pump infusion. The cause of the disease is not completely known but genetics plays an important role. We wish to explore how different genes may be involved in different individual cases, and if this may impact on what the best treatment is. There are rare cases of genetic diabetes with the same symptoms and blood profile as T1D but might be better managed with simpler and more effective treatments. The purpose of the study is to investigate how often diabetes is due to unusual genetic causes, to discover new genes involved and determine who should be tested for them. Less than 1% of individuals diagnosed as T1D are expected to have such genetic mutations. We are hoping to discover these cases and, by discovering new genes, identify those patients who might be better managed with different treatment.
