Exploring Real-Life Research Labs

On October 23rd, as part of the 20th Annual Child Health Research Days conference, the Children’s Hospital Research Institute of Manitoba (CHRIM) hosted its inaugural Discovery Day! This exciting event welcomed Grade 5 students to our facilities for a unique field trip in the labs, designed to exposed young and curious minds to the exciting world of science!

Students participated in an engaging hands-on adventure led by CHRIM scientists, in alignment with the province’s science curriculum. From the moment they arrived, the atmosphere buzzed with enthusiasm! Our researchers were eager to share their passion and knowledge, creating an engaging learning environment that encouraged exploration and discovery. Students were divided into groups and rotated through various interactive stations, each focusing on different areas of health research. They explored topics such as dentistry, allergies, bacteria, diabetes, and more. Each station offered hands-on activities where students could conduct experiments using the latest tools and technology found in real scientific research.

At the dentistry station, students explored oral health discovering the origins of cavities. They also learned about the sugar content in common beverages, gaining valuable insights into how diet affects dental health. The allergy station helped them understand how allergens affect the body, featuring hands-on demonstrations that brought the concepts to life.

The bacteria station was especially popular, allowing students to observe microbial cultures under microscopes and explore the microscopic world that surrounds us. Meanwhile, the diabetes station focused on understanding insulin and blood sugar levels, featuring interactive models that illustrated how these elements interact within the body.

Throughout the day, students were not just passive observers; they actively participated in their learning. Each experiment was designed to encourage critical thinking, teamwork, and a deeper appreciation of the scientific process.

One of the highlights of Discovery Day was witnessing the students’ reactions as they engaged with complex scientific concepts through hands-on activities. Their enthusiasm was truly contagious! We believe that by exposing young minds to real-world science and research, we can inspire the next generation of scientists, researchers, and healthcare professionals.

Discovery Day could not have happened without the hard work and dedication of our CHRIM staff and volunteers. Their commitment to education and outreach was evident in every detail of the event. Feedback from both students and teachers was overwhelmingly positive, highlighting how valuable and enjoyable the experience was.

As we conclude our successful inaugural Discovery Day, we are already looking forward to future events. Our goal is to continue fostering curiosity and a passion for science among young learners in our community. Initiatives like these can help shape a future filled with innovative thinkers who will make significant contributions to the field of health research.

We would like to thank all the students, teachers, and staff who made this day possible. We eagerly anticipate the next Discovery Day and the many opportunities to inspire young scientists in the years ahead!

Thank you to the Bioscience Association Manitoba for their sponsorship of this event!
