Research Focus

The overarching aim of Dr. Maruf's research program is to facilitate the development, evaluation and implementation of evidence-informed precision medicine tools using quantitative and qualitative methodologies and implementation science techniques. The lab has both wet and dry lab spaces to conduct cutting edge research to bring clinical innovation into practice.

As a Scientist and Co-investigator, Dr. Maruf was instrumental in launching Canada’s first pharmacogenetic testing service in Western Canada to improve drug treatment outcomes in patients receiving mental health care (PGx-SParK Study). The study has recruited >1,100 children and young adults in the last three years.

Dr. Maruf has published more than 35 peer-reviewed publications and chapters (Google Scholar, h-index: 17; i10-index: 24) in the areas of pharmacogenomics, pharmacokientics, and toxicology. He has published in major psychiatry and clinical pharmacology journals, for example Can J Psych; J Child Adolesc Psychopharmacol; Psychol Med; Psychiatry Res; Clin Pharmacol Ther; Eur J Clin Pharmacol; Pharmacopsychiatry; J Affect Disord .

Dr. Maruf’s research program is collaborative and follows a teacher-scholar model that involves scholarly
activities with students from various levels, innovative teaching approaches, and service activities to the institution, the profession, and the society. As a first-generation academic, and a former international student in Canada, Dr. Maruf upholds a strong appreciation for supporting justice, equity, diversity, and inclusiveness in his personal and professional life. He strongly emphasizes student mentorship and profoundly cares about their success in and out of academia.
