Learn about DREAM’s (Diabetes Research Envisioned & Accomplished in Manitoba) groundwork in enacting an anti-racism plan. This work helped to inform CHRIM’s journey to drive systemic change forward.

How We’re Advancing Inclusivity Across our Institute

CHRIM is committed to ongoing learning and accountability. We aim to take action to remove barriers that disproportionately impact Indigenous communities and historically marginalized people. Here are some examples:

  • Contracted an audit team who assessed justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion within leadership and CHRIM operations. They helped build us a roadmap to create an environment that supports our goals. View the audit summary here.

  • Launched “a safe space.” to communicate widely that CHRIM celebrates diversity and strives to be inclusive and supportive of everyone’s identities.

  • The Diversity & Justice Collaborative was formed and meets regularly to identify priorities that CHRIM leadership and operations may implement to promote inclusivity and a sense of belonging and accountability throughout the institute.

  • Developed an online incident reporting mechanism to foster an institute that is free of sexism, racism, discrimination, harassment, and/or mistreatment of any kind.

  • CHRIM and Diabetes Research Envisioned and Accomplished in Manitoba (DREAM) partnered with First Nations Health and Social Secretariat of Manitoba (FNHSSM) for a 10-week Anti-Indigenous Racism Training: Disrupting Indigenous Specific Racism, Moving Beyond Cultural Sensitivity in Healthcare. Two cohorts made up of CHRIM and DREAM staff and members completed the training, and a Community of Practice will support ongoing collaboration.

  • Natalie Rodriguez, MBA, ACC, CCIP, Director, Interdisciplinarity and Operations x̌əl sic snpax̌nwixʷtn, The University of British Columbia, presented to Research Theme Leads on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging “Moving from Check-Box Project to Implementation and Change.

  • Administrative staff completed Sexuality Education Resource Centre (SERC) MB 2STLGBQ+ Diversity and Inclusion Training. Staff also participated in an +Anti-Racism Educational Workshop by Equitable Solutions Consulting.

  • Embarked on an empathic learning journey through Braving the Healing Blanket Exercise, where administrative staff and other CHRIM staff members participated in an interactive session that reviewed the shared history of Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in Canada.

The Diversity & Justice Collaborative is an advisory group to CHRIM. They meet to identify priorities that CHRIM leadership and operations implement to promote inclusivity and a sense of belonging and accountability within the institute.

Membership is open to all CHRIM members, staff, partners, and affiliates.
