Dake Qi, MD, PhD

Dr. Dake Qi obtained his MD in China in 1999 and practiced as a surgeon for two years. He began in a Master’s program in the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics at UBC, Canada in 2002. Following the completion of this program, he continued a PhD study in the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at UBC with Dr. Brian Rodrigues, during which he began to delve into diabetes and cardiac metabolism. Upon graduation in 2007, he joined Dr. Lawrence Young’s laboratory at Yale Cardiovascular Research Center, Yale University as a postdoctoral fellow and successfully funded by American Heart Association personal award. He was appointed as an assistant professor at Memorial University of Newfoundland in August 2015 and joined the College of Pharmacy at University of Manitoba in September 2019. He has matured as an independent researcher, developing his own research interests in pro-cytokine induced metabolic dysfunctions and their association to heart disease. So far, he has published more than 50 scientific articles, many of which are in prestigious journals such as Journal of Clinical Investigation (2009, 2014 and 2018), PNAS (2013), Trends in Endocrinology and Metabolism (2015), iScience (2023), Molecular Metabolism (2024), Trends in Pharmacological Sciences (2024) and JCI Insight (2024). Dr. Qi’s lab has been funded by CIHR project grant and NSERC discovery grant since 2017.
