Research Focus

Metabolic syndrome is a group of medical problems that put children older than 10 years old at risk for heart disease and type 2 diabetes as adults. Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) is a proinflammatory cytokine that is also expressed in non-immune cells. Dr. Qi’s laboratory currently aims to
identify and test the role of MIF family proteins, including MIF and D-dopachrome tautomerase (DDT) in the development of metabolic dysfunction; and their roles in myocardial infarction associated with metabolic abnormalities. His lab uses molecular and cellular biological techniques combining with in vitro,
ex vivo and in vivo models, such as isolated primary cells, the mouse Langendorff heart perfusion setup and ligation of the LAD (left anterior descending coronary artery) in the intact mice.

Research Interests

1. Myocardial Infarction and cardiac metabolism
2. Proinflammatory factors and insulin resistance, diabetes and other metabolic dysfunctions
3. Atypical antipsychotic induced metabolic dysfunctions
