SUMMARY:DREAM Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Topic\nKetone Metabolism as a Target for the Pharmacotherapy of Type 2 Diabetes \nSpeaker\nDr. John Ussher\, PhD\nDr. John Ussher carried out his PhD training with Dr. Gary Lopaschuk at the University of Alberta\, where he acquired expertise in the molecular regulation of cardiac energy metabolism. Following his PhD training\, John trained with Dr. Daniel Drucker at the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute at the University of Toronto to acquire expertise in GLP-1 biology and how GLP-1 influences the cardiovascular system. He is currently a Professor in the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at the UofA\, where his lab investigates the mechanisms by which obesity-related perturbations in intermediary energy metabolism contribute to the pathology of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease\, and whether these mechanisms represent novel targets for pharmacotherapy. See event poster here. \nDetails\nThursday\, July 10th\, 2025\n12:00 – 1:00 PM\nJBRC 500

SUMMARY:DREAM Trainee Summer Series
DESCRIPTION:Speaker\nJasmine Pipella\nJasmine Pipella is a PhD student in Dr. Peter Thompson’s research lab. Her presentation will outline the step-by-step method for isolating mouse pancreatic islets\, from pancreas perfusion to islet purification. \nTopic\nMouse Islet Isolations: A Tool for Understanding Diabetes\nShe will highlight how the isolated pancreatic islets can be used to study physiology\, β-cell function\, and diabetes mechanisms using different assays. \nSpeaker\nCaitlin Menzies\nCaitlin Menzies is a PhD student training in Dr. Vern Dolinsky’s research lab. \nTopic\nMouse Colony Management: Practical Skills for Better Research\nThis talk will outline practical strategies for maintaining a healthy\, well-organized mouse colony and highlights how thoughtful colony management can directly improve experimental outcomes. Topics will range from core husbandry practices to special considerations for transgenic lines\, with a focus on optimizing both behavioural and physiological research. \nDetails\nJuly 15\, 2025\n12:00 – 1:00 pm\nJBRC 500
